History: NBT, SMB, and IBM

 

early/mid 1980's

  • IBM (remember them?) and Sytec (who?) co-developed a LAN system for PCs.

    • Proprietary broadband LAN hardware

    • ≤ 80 nodes per LAN

    • Software interface via NetBIOS
      (Network Basic Input Output System)

 

  • IBM created the Server Message Block protocol for network filesharing.

    • Originally the BAF protocol

    • Simple file I/O primitives (DOS calls?)
