	Kurt Erwin Hertel born 1910 in Adorf, Saxony, Germany died 1985 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Emma Löffel born April 13, 1906 in Kappel am Rhein, Württemberg, Germany died 1984 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania One Child: Erwin Carl Hertel (my father) Here's what I know--or think I know--about my grandfather's side of the family: He went by the name Erwin, even though his first name was Kurt. It seems this was common. His father (my great-grandfather) was named Johann Christoph Hertel but was called Christoph. He was the older of two brothers. The other brother was named Carl (or Karl). Karl stayed in Germany, and wound up fighting for the Germans in the 2nd world war. He was lost at the Russian Front. I met his widow once, when I was eleven years old. Too young to remember, I'm afraid. My great grand-parents visited the United States breifly after the war, but decided to return home to "wait for Carl". Their town was in East Germany, so they didn't get to visit again. They were still alive when I was born. I was born on my great-grandfather Christoph's birthday, January 31st. That's why my name is Christopher. I have old documents on which my great-grandfather signed his name Härtel. In 1994 I visited Adorf. People there still remembered my great-grandfather! I found the house that he had built, and it was still owned by my father's cousins. In Adorf, I met a man named Fritz Hertel. He told me that he and my grandfather had been childhood friends, but they were not related. Seems my family changed their name to Hertel to fit in better locally (my father also told me that). The rest is legend: According to the stories, the family was originally Dutch, and the family name was Van Hartl. That name is still common. My grandfather's great-great grandparents were upper-middle class (by some accounts wealthy) merchants, and decided to move to Austria (Vienna?) where they could better enjoy their money. (My mother always claimed that my grandfather had oriental eyes. Probably, she said, because one of the Dutch ancestors had brought back a bride from a trip to Asia.) Great-Great Grandfather was a gambler, and squandered the family fortune. My Great Grandfather, when still young, joined the Austrian army to avoid the problems of poverty and debt. He was low-ranking and was not permitted to marry. This posed a problem when my grandfather appeared. He went AWOL and headed for the border. The family was poor (my grandfather used to tell stories of scraping the butter off the bread so that there would be more for later, and of endless meals of only turnips). They moved once and had better luck, but returned to Adorf only to fall back into poverty.

When I visited Kappel in 1994 I was told that Tante Helen was still alive and doing well. I must assume that she has since passed on. Amalie Jan. 22, 1905 to 19?? Tante Amalie married Adolf Hund (also from Kappel) and lived in Chicago. When we lived in the Chicago area as a kid I met Tante Amalie several times. She was a pip. Emma (my grandmother) April 13, 1906 to 1985 Sofie Nov. 13, 1907 to 19?? Tanta Sofie was still living in the ancestoral home in 1994, but had passed away when I visited in 2003. She lost her husband in the war. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren still live in Kappel. Josefine Aug. 23, 1909 to 19?? Tante Fina also lived in Philadelphia, close to Helen. Married Kuno Beck. Martha Maria Oct. 5, 1912 to 19?? Was still in the house in Kappel in 1994, has since passed away.
